Despite rumors that surfaced a while ago regarding the Sultanate withdrawing it’s invitation to host a cycling event as part of the Merckx organized cycling season due to the health concerns raised during the Swine Flu threat period, the Amaury Sports Organization confirmed that the inaugural Tour of Oman will commence as scheduled on the 14th-19th of November.
The details to the event are scarce at the moment, and will be announced in Paris early next year, but we are aware that the tour will contain multiple stages with races both inside, and outside Muscat on a course of 6 days. The race, the brain child of legendary cyclist Eddy Merckx, is part of a series that includes tours in Australia, Spain, Qatar and other countries. The tour, Eddy Merckx hopes, will spark interest in cycling in the region and jump-start it’s globalization. He has been heard showing keen interest towards the inclination stages in the mountains, because, while the Tour of Qatar will likely have the same climate, it will not share Tour of Oman’s topography.
More details when available.
