Default Volkswagen Golf R (R20) Revealed

2.0t AWD 265 HP

factory estimates 0-62MPH (should be alot faster in reality :D)
6 speed manual 6.5s
6 speed DSG 6.4s

Quote:
The Volkswagen Golf R32 had an small but dedicated fan base here in the U.S. It's 250 horses and road-gripping 4Motion all-wheel drive made for one sprightly Golf, but changing times calls for another approach for the R franchise. Our German friends at VW are using home field advantage at the Frankfurt Motor Show to announce the highly anticipated 2010 R20. The newest R-badged Golf will drop a couple cylinders and add turbocharging for motivation, but the AWD system will stay to keep all that power from being wasted at the front wheels.

The R20 will be reportedly be powered by a boosted 2.0L engine capable of 265 hp and 258 lb-ft, likely an exact duplicate of the engine of the Scirocco R20. World Car Fans says the new powertrain will make for a 0-62 time of 6.5 seconds with the six-speed manual, and 6.4 seconds with the dual clutch gear box. Those times sound pretty slow to us and are akin to what a standard GTI can manage, so we're guessing VW is sandbagging for now.

The R20 also has several aesthetic changes including a new front grille, LED daylight running lamps and plenty of fresh R-badging to let onlookers know this is no run-of-the-mill Golf. Also new are some gorgeous new rims that look to be of the 18 inch variety, and the interior receives some tasteful two tone treatments as well. We'll be sure to update you on all things R20 as official information from VW becomes available. Click below to enjoy the high-res gallery

well i know it's an AWD but it's a 2.0T at the end :P

loving the design, specially the taillights LED design

something tells me it's gonna perform better than the S3 . . .

yeah i dont like it being AWD too, but many people would really like better handling and better traction, and of course the fact that its the Top Of The Line Golf, so no hate for it at all

me on the other hand would like better straight line performance,
so an MKVI GTI with a K04 Upgrade, Wheels and lowering, and of course the R tails would be better for me ;) (im just dreaming btw :P)

ckz ... the 6.5 is just an estimate ... the mkv gti had a 6.9(DSG) estimate and some mags got it in 6 seconds flat and the average was from 6.2-6.5 ........ volkswagen always underestimates (or sandbags as the article says)

now this Golf R is basically an audi S3 in a golf shape .... but with some improvements ... so its not weird if it is actually faster :)

6.5 is an estimate (and 6.4 for the DSG)

I'm sure it will do it in less than 5.6 seconds.

and it's not all about 0-60 ;)

Its well designed. The rear looks good, those taillights are stylish too.

The rims is something nice and new.

This is one of, if not the most, highly anticipated hatchbacks for 2010.

The R20 lays low and plays it safe in the looks department, both exterior and interior. 265 ponies from a 2.0 turbocharged engine is relatively ass kicking. The figures however are anything but pleasing to be honest. As mentioned above, this car has a lot of potential.

MORE:

new 0-62MPH estimate of 5.7s for the manual and 5.5s for the DSG :D :D

oh and its not exactly like the S3's engine, S3 was a T-FSI .. this new engine is a TSI ... like the improvement that happened between the MKV 2.0T to the MKVI 2.0t ( aka better fuel pump, and better internals, lower compression i think)

Devilesh looks :D
